Navigating Finances in Your Heart-Centered Tutoring Business

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Brooke Benson of the Not Starving Artists podcast. Brooke went from being a broke Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate to a professional actor and money coach! She joined us in Member’s Academy for an awe-inspiring conversation about the common struggles tutors and educators experience around money, similar to those with careers in the arts, and how to cultivate a positive money mindset.

In teaching, we often hear this outdated and damaging saying: “You are in it for the outcome, not the income.”

Educators invest in their learning, resources, and more. Additionally, educators have expenses like anyone in any other profession. However, just like “struggling artists” educators are often made to feel like they can’t or shouldn’t care about money.

When it comes to heart-centered careers like teaching and tutoring, the intersection of passion and financial wellness often presents a challenge. While these professions are driven by a deep sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive impact, they also require careful attention to finances.

Doing the Thought Work

One aspect to consider in heart-centered careers is the concept of “thought work.” This is the idea that our mindset about money can significantly influence our ability to navigate financial challenges. Just as we monitor our thoughts and emotions in other aspects of our lives, it’s crucial to recognize when financial worries start to impact our well-being.

A common misconception surrounding heart-centered professions is the notion that those who pursue them should not be motivated by financial gain. However, this stereotype overlooks the fact that financial stability is a valid concern for everyone, regardless of their career path. Viewing money as an “expander” rather than a limitation opens up new possibilities for growth and impact.

Thought work alone cannot address underlying financial challenges, but when combined with strategic planning, it becomes a powerful tool for transformation.

Three Common Pitfalls Teachers and Tutors Face When It Comes to Finances

1. Avoidance

Many teachers, tend to avoid facing their financial realities. This avoidance stems from a fear of prioritizing money over their passion for helping others, but recognizing the importance of financial stability is essential for achieving their goals.

2. A Messy Financial Ecosystem

Visualizing your financial ecosystem is crucial for understanding where your money flows. Many people either have a chaotic and confusing financial setup with numerous accounts and transactions, or they need more infrastructure, resulting in a lack of clarity and understanding about their finances.

3. Not Allowing Yourself to Want

Teachers often struggle with allowing themselves to acknowledge and pursue their deepest desires due to societal expectations around how they should view money. However, embracing and acknowledging these desires is the first step toward creating a pathway to achieve them.

Navigating heart-centered careers like teaching and tutoring requires a delicate balance between passion and financial wellness. By cultivating a positive mindset and implementing practical strategies, we can unlock new opportunities for growth and fulfillment. Embrace the power of thought work and strategic planning to create a future where passion and prosperity go hand in hand!
