4 Ways to Make the Most of Your Summer as an Educator

Let’s talk about setting up a summer of intention. As the school year winds down over the next couple of weeks, begin to think about how you can make the most of your summer as an educator, especially when you run a tutoring business.

Summer can look different for all of us. We may be fortunate enough to spend most of the summer with our family and friends. Many of us, especially those of us with private tutoring practices, also work during the summer, although we might have a different schedule. You might be teaching summer school this summer or working a part-time job. No matter what your summer looks like, with a little bit of intention, you can have your most fulfilling and productive summer yet!

Here, we want to talk about setting up a summer where you are intentional about how you spend your time. Let’s explore four areas that you might want to consider and think about when you look at the summer ahead.

Here are Four Simple Ways You Can Have an Intentional Summer as an educator!

1. Find ways to rest.

Pay attention to rest! Whether you are in private practice or you are in the school system, by the end of the school year, you’re likely tired. It’s been a busy year!

So, the first thing you want to prioritize is rest. That could mean that when you are looking at your summer schedule, you are building in some time for vacations, or maybe even building in one day a week where you have nothing scheduled. Even if you are a private tutor and you have a full summer schedule, try really hard to give yourself a day somewhere in your week when you can have nothing on the schedule.

No matter what, you have to find a way to rest, replenish, and restore your energy. If you don’t prioritize rest, the next three points will be meaningless because you will be too exhausted to do any of them. That is why it is especially important to make rest a priority at the beginning of the summer.

2. Think about productivity.

You might be thinking after hearing the word rest, you don’t even want to talk about productivity! But, if you’ve gotten some rest, you will be ready to think about how you can use this summer to get ready for the new school year.

Don’t rush into it! Just think about if you have a few things that you would like to get done over the summer. It could be something in your personal life, at your home or in your garden, something to prepare for your business or the new school year.

Once you’ve gotten your time to rest, maybe it’s time to start working on your handbooks or policy guides, new student forms, and things that will make your life exponentially easier when Fall kicks in.

Do you have one or two things that would really be wonderful if you could get those done and accomplished? Once you’ve taken time to rest, think about how you can be proactive and productive this summer to set yourself up for a great upcoming school year.

3. Plan for success in the next school year.

After we spend some time thinking about how we want to be productive, it’s time for some planning.

Use some of your time this summer for planning ahead. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you want the Fall to look like?
  • Which students are you going to be seeing?
  • Are there changes in your schedule that you might want to make?
  • Do you have any openings that you’re anticipating coming up? (If so, you can start planting the seeds over the summer for how to get some new students. You don’t want to get to August and realize that you actually need five more students!)

Use a part of your summer to get out calendars, notepads, and agendas, and think about what you want the fall to look like. Then spend some of your summer planning for success.

4. Dream big!

Set aside time to dream. Get quiet in a place where you actually have the mental space to breathe and think. Then, start dreaming of what you want next year to look like and feel like for you. This is where you start to envision what your schedule will look like if it allowed room for the things that are important to you.

Imagine what it would feel like and what life would be like if you got to have some of those things that you’ve been dreaming about for a while. If you get a really clear vision of where you want to go, you might make some decisions that help get you closer to it. You might see some opportunities that come along that you never expected that will help you get closer to the life you’re dreaming of. But if you don’t even know what you want, you might not recognize the opportunities when there staring you in the face.

Think about this summer as your “summer of intention.” Think about what is the most important thing out of all these for you and start with that. Then, make the most of your summer as an educator!
