3 Tips to Master Your Messaging and Connect with Families

How we speak and how we communicate, whether it’s on social media, in print, or in person, matters. This is especially true if you want to master your messaging and connect with families!

As teachers, it’s easy for us to speak in what we like to call “Teacher Talk.” You know you’ve been in a meeting where a bunch of educational jargon is being thrown around. And, that’s fine for a meeting full of educators.

However, when you’re sharing on your social media pages, in a newsletter, or speaking directly with parents, they may end up checking out or looking at you like you have three heads if you only speak in “Teacher Talk”.

You need to look at everything you share through the filter of who will be receiving that information. When it comes to your tutoring business, that will most likely be a parent or caregiver.

So, the next time you share on social media, send out a newsletter, or speak with a parent, keep these tips in mind.

Here are 3 tips you can use to master your messaging and make quality connections with families:

1. Keep things focused on them

85%-90% of what you’re saying should be focused on their child and their child’s needs. Focus on the family, the family’s needs, and how things are affecting them.

This is important when you are advertising your services, especially in the beginning. Sometimes we can make things a little too much about ourselves, and that’s only natural. We’re trying to communicate that we’re the one who is qualified to help so it’s easy to see how we can end up spending too much time talking about ourselves and our experience.

Especially if this is your first communication, the focus needs to be on that child and their goals, THEN you can get into how your services can help them reach their goals, alleviate the pain they’re experiencing, and finally experience success.

2.  Make connections.

In this digital world, people want to see who you are and feel connected to you. This is how you begin to build that know, like, and trust factor.

You can always use your picture in communications and share your credentials, qualifications, and experience. But the best place to connect with parents and caregivers is on the About Me page of your website or even in a video titled, Get to Know Your Reading Specialist.

Another way to connect with parents is through testimonials. Read The Power of Tutor Testimonials to Grow Your Business.

3. Keep the information parent-friendly.

Especially when sharing resources on social media, keep that info parent-friendly. When you’re sharing information, do so in a way that the parent or caregiver will recognize what it is that you are saying.

Remember, the parent is the expert on the child and sees the struggle firsthand, but they might not know what that struggle is called.

When you’re sharing a resource make sure you let parents know what’s in it for them. You can use the caption on a post before the link to direct parents to exactly what they should be looking for in that article or research. You can even pull out a few of the best nuggets and put them into parent-friendly terms for them.

Whatever it is that you are sharing, think about how it will be received by someone who is not an expert in the field.  This will give them more of a reason to share and engage with you and your content.
